Summary

Comedy fantasy. The inimitable puppets are joined by Michael Caine for their own special interpretation of the classic Dickens Christmas tale, in which miserly Scrooge is visited by ghosts to help him mend his selfish ways.

Calum Baker

Though it's rightly become a festive family classic, Brian Henson's handcrafted adaptation of the evergreen Charles Dickens tale is - you have to admit - a bonkers idea that might never have worked. Michael Caine stars as miserly humbug Ebenezer Scrooge, who gradually cheers up and learns the true meaning of Christmas with the help of some 280 Muppet performers, from Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit to Animal as... himself. But the screenplay's wry humour and the mind-boggling ingenuity of the production team sell every moment. Talking animals and catchy musical numbers aside, this is remarkably faithful to the novella and nails its handsome, picture-book vision of snowy Victorian London. The Great Gonzo is a marvellous Dickens, warmly narrating the original prose to camera (and sometimes "whispering for dramatic emphasis") with input from trusty sidekick Rizzo the Rat. Caine, for his part, bounces off his fuzzy co-stars beautifully, treating Scrooge's arc with utmost sincerity throughout - and even holding his own against Miss Piggy. Starting in 2022, Disney+ began offering two versions of the film, one of which reinstates the previously removed ballad When Love Is Gone.
